Mechanisms of Rumor Manufacturing and Their Paths to Becoming Presumed Facts
The journey of a rumor begins the moment it is fabricated as a mere piece of information, then passes through complex stages that end with its adoption by the public as an established fact. The power of a rumor does not depend on its accuracy, but rather on its high capacity for rapid spread and its targeting of the instincts of fear and curiosity in the recipient, making it an effective tool for misleading public opinion and falsifying reality.
Motivations and Causes of Formation
Rumors operate according to three fundamental drivers that ensure their birth and continuation. The first driver is “intent to deceive,” where a party deliberately fabricates false information to achieve certain gains. Meanwhile, “misunderstanding” emerges as a second factor, leading to an unintentional distortion of a real event or news, altering its original context. The third and most dangerous factor is the “information vacuum,” because the absence of official and accurate information opens the door to speculations that quickly transform into rumors filling this void.
Digital Acceleration: From the Individual to Millions
Rumors follow a geometric pattern in spreading, as every person who shares the information becomes a partner in its creation whether they intended to or not. Data indicates that information transfer begins from one person reaching three, then branches to 27 people, until reaching thousands within just a few hours. Based on a study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2018, false information spreads six times faster than correct news on social media platforms, giving it a time advantage in reaching people before refutation or correction arrives.
Transformation into Truth in Collective Consciousness
Rumors rely on psychological mechanisms that make the public accept them without questioning. The most important of these mechanisms is “repetition,” because what an individual hears many times appears true with the passage of time. This is accompanied by “confirmation bias,” which pushes people to believe only what aligns with their pre-existing convictions, in addition to the phenomenon of “source amnesia,” where the recipient forgets the origin of the information but retains its content in memory. Consequently, the lie solidifies and resists any correction attempts even after its falsehood is proven with conclusive evidence.
Spread Determinants and the Emotional Trap
The continuation and expansion of a rumor is linked to four main factors that vary in their impact: the speed of publication that precedes verification tools, the absence of self-censorship and verification by users, people’s excessive trust in some unreliable sources, and the emotional effect that disrupts logical thinking. These factors remain the fuel that always drives rumors, requiring collective awareness based on accountability and source-seeking before contributing to the publication process.
