The Truth About the Israeli Flag Being Raised at Homs Protests in 2011

Accounts on social media circulated an image claimed to document the raising of the Israeli flag during one of the protests in the Bab al-Siba’ neighborhood of Homs in 2011.

Original Claim:

“2011 Bab al-Siba’ Homs — for those who have forgotten what happened during their so-called revolution. #Syria”

Verification Summary: Misleading.

The “Kashshaf” team verified the circulating image on February 24, 2026, by conducting a reverse image search. It was found that the original image was published on March 2, 2012. The authentic image documents a large march that took place in the Egyptian city of Suez, heading toward Al-Arba’een Square in solidarity with and support for the Syrian people — not in the city of Homs. Furthermore, the original version of the image shows that the flags being raised are the Palestinian flag, the Egyptian flag, and the Syrian Revolution flag, with no Israeli flag appearing anywhere in the image.

Why Is This Report Misleading?

Incorrect temporal and geographic context: The image was taken in the city of Suez, Egypt, on March 2, 2012 — not in the Bab al-Siba’ neighborhood of Homs in 2011.

Digital forgery (content repurposing): The original image was digitally manipulated, with the Palestinian flag replaced by the Israeli flag before being recirculated in order to provoke controversy and distort the facts.
