Kashaf Platform Methodology
Kashaf is a fact-checking and investigative journalism platform specialized in uncovering facts and debunking rumors and circulating claims.
We follow a publicly stated and reviewable methodology that clearly distinguishes between the claim, the evidence, and the conclusion.
Our work is guided by impartiality, transparency of sources and methodology, and a commitment to publicly correcting errors when they occur.
How Do We Select Claims?
We prioritize our work according to clear criteria:
1. Reach and Public Significance
The wider a claim circulates or the greater its public impact, the higher its verification priority.
2. Potential Impact and Harm
Priority is given to claims that may cause societal, health, security, or legal harm.
3. Verifiability
We clarify what can be conclusively verified through evidence and what cannot be determined due to insufficient data or lack of original sources.
4. Balanced Coverage
We apply one consistent standard to all claims without selectivity.
Kashaf Workflow Cycles
We operate through two distinct workflows:
First: News and Circulating Claims Workflow
- Monitoring
- Source Verification
- Claim Verification (Evidence Review)
- Editing
- Review
- Publication
- Post-Publication Evaluation
Second: Investigative Journalism Workflow
(For in-depth reports, investigative features, albums, or videos)
- Monitoring
- Source Verification
- Data Collection
- Information Analysis
- Editing
- Review
- Publication
- Post-Publication Evaluation
General Principles
- Whenever possible, we return to the original source: official statements, documents, original recordings, databases, primary publications, or verifiable eyewitnesses.
- When a secondary source is used, we clarify the reason and its limitations.
- If revealing the identity of a field source could put them at risk, their identity is documented internally under protective protocols. The public is provided with a professional description of the source without disclosing their identity.
- Kashaf uses digital verification tools and OSINT (Open-Source Intelligence) tools to examine materials and sources.
Verification Classifications at Kashaf
We use clear and explained classifications within each published piece:
| Classification | When Used | What We Clarify to the Reader |
|---|---|---|
| True | The claim matches reliable and available evidence. | The core evidence and its references. |
| False | The claim clearly contradicts the evidence. | The primary point of error. |
| Misleading | The information is technically correct but used in an incorrect context, time frame, location, or causal relationship. | What is accurate and what was taken out of context. |
| Fabricated | A document, image, or video has been forged or manipulated. | The type of manipulation and how it was detected. |
| Unverifiable | There is insufficient evidence to reach a conclusion, or original sources cannot be accessed. | The reason verification was not possible and what would be required to determine the claim. |
Editing and Review Process
Each piece is edited according to a neutral editorial guide that clearly separates:
- The presentation of the claim
- The presentation of the evidence
- The final conclusion
Before publication, we review:
- Impartiality
- Attribution and sourcing
- Links and references
- Quotations
- Copyright compliance
- Consistency between the conclusion and the evidence
Publication and Evaluation
Publication is our gateway to engaging with the public by presenting evidence in a clear and understandable format.
After publication, we monitor audience impact and respond to new information or feedback in accordance with our corrections and complaints policy.
Documentation of Verification Methods
To enhance transparency, we include a brief section at the end of each article stating:
- The type of verification conducted
- The tools and sources used
- Any additional procedures that supported the conclusion
