The idea is born
Intensive monitoring of misinformation in the period after the regime's fall, and a conviction that a professional Arabic space for verification was needed.
From January 2025 to today — how the idea began, and why.
The idea for "Kashaf" began in January 2025, at a pivotal moment in Syria's history, after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. In that period the scene was not only full of news, but weighed down by an enormous amount of misinformation, rumors, and unreliable claims that spread quickly, taking advantage of the absence of media and government institutions from covering this sensitive aspect.
Amid all this, we sensed the scale of the danger that false information can cause — not only to people's awareness, but to civil peace itself, in a country just emerging from a long period of repression and division.
From here the idea emerged: the need for an independent, professional space whose primary aim is to deliver accurate information and to refute any misleading claim that might stir confusion or inflame sectarian conflict.
In February 2025, the idea turned into action. "Kashaf" was founded as a media initiative across the digital sphere, with no fixed geographic headquarters, by Syrian journalists and young volunteers from different countries around the world, brought together by the belief that the truth cannot wait, and that leaving the field to misinformation poses a direct danger to society.
From the outset, our work at "Kashaf" focused on producing content based on fact-checking, offering clarifications, and carrying out original investigative reporting, in addition to data analysis and the preparation of in-depth reports related to Syrian affairs.
We chose to address Syrians wherever they are, inside Syria and in the diaspora, as well as everyone concerned with Syrian affairs. We published "Kashaf" content across social-media platforms, alongside our own website, which we launched on the anniversary of Syria's liberation.
"Kashaf" was not a conventional project in terms of structure: it rests on a team of young volunteers spanning the various specializations needed to run an investigation and fact-checking platform, and it operates under its own internal standards that guarantee professionalism, accuracy, and objectivity.
From the very first moment, our position was clear: "Kashaf" is an independent, non-profit platform that belongs to no political or funding entity.
Our slogan — "Kashaf… your eye on the truth" — expresses the philosophy of our work and our vision: we place the truth at the heart of our concern, and we strive to be the public's tool for seeing it clearly, away from misinformation, manipulation, or bias.
