Accounts on social media circulated images of a person appearing in military uniform, accompanied by information claiming that he is named Firas Saif al-Din, that he was a member of the former regime and in charge of the Tropicana checkpoint of the Fourth Division in Damascus, and that he currently holds a post in the General Reconciliation Council of Syria.

The fact-checking team reviewed the claim through a digital trace using keywords, alongside a review of the official accounts of the General Reconciliation Council of Syria. It emerged that the head of the council, Sheikh Ali al-Jasim, denied in a video that the person shown in the images is among the council members, noting that members are selected according to strict criteria. On that basis, linking the circulated images to an official post in the council rests on no documented foundation.
Why is this claim misleading?
An error in identity attribution: The claim relied on attributing an official role and post to a person through images in military uniform without any documented basis, while the head of the General Reconciliation Council denied his connection to it, making the link between the images and the post misleading and intended to suggest a reality unsupported by official sources.
