Accounts on social media circulated a video, with those publishing it claiming that it was recent and documented what was described as a wide security mobilization by the Iraqi army on the Iraqi-Syrian border, coinciding with the arrival of Iraqi military reinforcements and movements by the Syrian army near the border between the two countries.

The fact-checking team traced the clip by extracting still frames and running them through a reverse image search using Google Lens, alongside tracing the original version and reviewing the context of its first publication. The tracing showed that the video had been published earlier, on 11 February 2024, and bears no relation to current events. Based on the digital tracing and the tracking of the source of the video, the clip does not document any recent Iraqi security mobilization or Iraqi military reinforcements on the Iraqi-Syrian border; it was recirculated outside its temporal context with a description suggesting that it belonged to current developments.
Why is this claim misleading?
Out of temporal context: The claim relied on an old clip dating to February 2024, recirculated with a description implying that it documented current developments on the Iraqi-Syrian border, in order to suggest a military escalation that the facts do not support.
