Pages and accounts on social media circulated a statement attributed to the official in the "SDC" Ilham Ahmed, claiming that there was a consensus to change the state's official name from the Syrian Arab Republic to the Syrian Republic.

The fact-checking team researched the circulating statement, and found that it is old, dating back to 23 June 2025, and had previously been published within discussions related to the shape of the Syrian state and its political future. In the same context, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani had clarified that changing the state's name is not a government decision but falls within the prerogatives of the People's Assembly and the constitutional path, and no official announcement has been issued so far in this regard.

Why is this claim misleading?
Out of temporal context: An old statement dating back to June 2025 was re-published and presented as a current, effective consensus to change the state's name, without noting its date or the absence of any official decision, suggesting a development that has no basis.
