Accounts on social media circulated a video claimed to show Mervat Toutou, a member of the Syrian parliament, bringing in a sign language expert during an intervention, alleging that this was because her voice is considered awrah. During the intervention she spoke about improving public services and preventing mixing between the sexes.
The Kashaf team carried out a visual analysis of the circulating video and detected indicators that it is not authentic, including distortions as the figure advances toward the podium, the microphone passing through her body in an unnatural way, and a screen appearing suddenly within the scene. These indicators are consistent with content generated using artificial intelligence.
The team also traced the source of the circulating video and found that it was published by the page Marsad Syria al-Hurra, the backup page, which stated in its post that the video had been produced by the page administration using artificial intelligence for the purpose of satire. The team was also able to reach the original image that was used to generate the video.
Why is this claim misleading?
An AI-generated video: Based on the visual analysis, the tracing of the content source, and the statement of the publishing page, the video does not document a real event. It was generated using artificial intelligence, and circulating it as a real incident makes the claim misleading.
