Pages on social media circulated a video that those who posted it claimed was recent, showing river ferries still operating in Deir ez-Zor after the drowning incident that took the lives of a number of people.
The fact-checking team followed up on the report through digital tracing, which included breaking the video into still frames and running a reverse search on them, tracing the visual fingerprint of the content, and comparing it with archived material. The results showed that the video dates back to 2025.
Why is this claim misleading?
Out of temporal context: An old clip dating to 2025 was reposted as documentation of a recent event, in order to suggest that river ferries were still running in Deir ez-Zor after the latest drowning incident, which changes the temporal context of the original content and misleads the public.
