Accounts on social media circulated a video whose publishers claimed it shows the spread of morality patrols known as Hisba and Daawa on the Syrian coast, referring to the future of the tourism sector in Syria.
The Kashaf team carried out a digital trace of the clip that included breaking it into still frames and running a reverse search on them, and found that the video has been circulating since 2022. The trace also revealed older versions published at the time as having been filmed in Algeria, with no reliable evidence or technical indicators proving it was filmed in Syria, and Kashaf had previously debunked it.
Why is this claim misleading?
Out of its temporal and geographic context: An old clip dating back to 2022, previously published as being from Algeria, was re-circulated as recent footage filmed on the Syrian coast, without any evidence to support that.
