The truth about a video of fighters in Syria playing football with human heads

Numerous accounts on social media platforms circulated a video that those who posted it claimed documents armed fighters in Syria playing football using human heads.

Still frames from the video and a reverse-image search using Google Lens showed that the circulating clip is old and dates back to late 2013. The video documents practices by members of the Taliban movement in Pakistan, and the clip has nothing to do with Syria or members of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The video was falsely linked to the Syrian revolution to drive engagement and distort the picture.

Why is this claim misleading?

Out of geographic and political context: The video was falsely attributed to armed factions in Syria, when it in fact dates, both historically and geographically, to members of the Taliban movement in Pakistan.
