Social media pages circulated an image that publishers claimed documented a large wave of Syrian displacement into Lebanon in recent weeks as a result of economic conditions in Syria, while suggesting Syria might take on a security or military role in Lebanon.

A review of official data issued by the competent authorities in Syria and Lebanon found no reports confirming a large recent wave of Syrian displacement into Lebanon. Data from Syria's General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs shows that crossing traffic does not support the claim: tens of thousands of Syrians were recorded returning voluntarily through the Jousieh and al-Areeda crossings. Visual examination of the attached image also showed it was generated using artificial intelligence, given distortions in facial features and limbs, inconsistent scene details, and the absence of any original version.
Why is this claim false?
Fabricated information and a generated image: Official border-crossing data establishes there is no large displacement movement, and the circulating image is AI-generated rather than a genuine photograph.
