Pages on social media circulated a report claiming that an unidentified aircraft had bombed a weapons depot near the city of Sarmada in northern Idlib, referring to allegations that the Syrian government had supplied the party carrying out the strike with the depot's coordinates in preparation for targeting it.

The fact-checking team verified the claim by reviewing official and open sources, including statements issued by the bodies concerned. It emerged that the Media and Communication Directorate at the Ministry of Defense clarified to Al-Ikhbariya Al-Souriya that the incident resulted from the explosion of a temporary store designated for gathering weapons and war remnants ahead of moving them, near the city of Sarmada in northern Idlib, with no reference to the site being subjected to an airstrike.

The team also contacted media workers and local residents in the area, and their accounts contained no information about hearing aircraft before the explosion, which does not support the circulating account that the site was hit by an air raid.

The Ministry of Defense clarification about a temporary store exploding near Sarmada

Why is this claim misleading?

Inaccurate interpretation: The explosion of a temporary store for gathering weapons and war remnants was presented as an airstrike carried out by an unidentified aircraft, with added allegations that the Syrian government supplied the site's coordinates, without data supporting this account.
