Claim MISLEADING

Did Syria's education minister honor the channel that called Jazira residents "settlers"?

Did Syria's education minister honor the channel that called Jazira residents "settlers"?

Illustrative image

Pages and accounts on social media circulated a photo claiming it documented Syrian Education Minister Mohammad Abdul Rahman Turko honoring the channel that had described some residents of Syria's Jazira region as "settlers."

The circulating claim

Tracking the claim, running a keyword search and a reverse-image search with Google Lens showed that the context attached to the photo was false. The person shown in it is the broadcaster Dilbixwin Dara, a lead anchor for news bulletins and political talk shows on the Rudaw media network. Moreover, the outlet that described some Jazira residents as "settlers" is the Ronahi satellite channel, not the network the broadcaster in the photo belongs to.

What Kashaf found

Why is this claim misleading?

False connection: A genuine photo was tied to an unrelated claim. A shot of a Rudaw broadcaster was presented as an honoring of the channel behind the controversial description, when that channel is in fact Ronahi, making the link between the image and the claim misleading.
