Accounts on social media circulated a video that those who posted it claimed documents a recent mass protest against President Ahmad al-Sharaa.
Examining the circulating clip, after splitting it into still frames and subjecting it to a reverse-image search, showed that the video is old and has nothing to do with current political events. The original recording dates back to 17 May 2024, when it was filmed during a protest in northwestern Syria about seven months before the fall of the former regime, confirming the falsification of the temporal and political context accompanying the clip to deceive followers into believing it is a recent event.
