Pages on social media circulated a video that publishers claimed was recent, showing a member of the remnants of the Assad regime threatening the Syrian state and menacing General Security personnel, while admitting that fighters from the regime's remnants are within the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces "SDF".
Following up on the report through digital tracing, which included splitting the video into still frames and running a reverse image search, tracing the visual fingerprint, and archiving the publication timeline, the fact-checking team found that the video dates back to January 2026.
Why is this claim misleading?
Out of temporal context: An old video dating back to January 2026 was recirculated out of its temporal context and presented as recent, in order to suggest that it documents current events and an ongoing escalation against the Syrian state.
