Pages and accounts on social media circulated a statement attributed to French President Emmanuel Macron, alleging that he demanded Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa begin a direct dialogue with Ghazal Ghazal with the aim of implementing an Alawite federalism on the Syrian coast.

The fact-checking team conducted a cross-search using keywords and reviewed the French President's official statements, and found that the circulating statement is false and that Macron made no such remarks. On the contrary, the French President had declared his country's commitment to supporting a unified, sovereign Syria, after arriving in the capital Damascus on the evening of Monday 6 July 2026.
Why is this claim false?
Fabricated statements: A statement he never made about establishing an Alawite federalism on the Syrian coast was attributed to French President Emmanuel Macron, to suggest the existence of international support for partition schemes and to inflame public opinion.
