Pages on social media circulated a report claiming that elements affiliated with the Syrian government had hanged a young man inside a building in Latakia province this morning.
The fact-checking team contacted the director of the relations, press and legal affairs department, Nour al-Din Brimo, who confirmed that the young man had died after taking his own life by hanging, and that the incident had taken place on Wednesday rather than this morning as stated in the posts, which contradicts the circulating account that attributed his death to government elements.
Why is this claim misleading?
A false connection: A death by suicide was attributed to a hanging carried out by government elements, by linking the incident to a party that had nothing to do with it and altering its timing, in order to suggest a systematic abuse.
