Pages and accounts on social media circulated a video clip whose publishers claimed it was recent, and that it documented Israeli forces detaining members of the Syrian government forces in preparation for executing them.
The fact-checking team traced the clip digitally by breaking it into still frames and running a reverse image search on them, which showed that the clip was published on 8 December 2023 and documents the detention of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, not members of the Syrian government forces as the circulating posts claimed.
Why is this claim misleading?
Out of temporal and geographic context: The claim rested on republishing an older clip filmed in the Gaza Strip and attributing it to a current event in Syria, in order to suggest that executions were being carried out against members of the Syrian government forces.
