The truth about a photo of Houthis capturing and stripping Syrian fighters in Yemen

Illustrative image

Accounts and pages on social media circulated a photo, with those sharing it claiming that it showed Syrian fighters being captured and stripped of their clothes by the Houthi group in Yemen.

The circulating claim

The fact-checking team ran a reverse image search on the circulating photo and found that it is old and had been recirculated outside its original geographic and topical context, and that it shows no Syrian fighters in Yemen. The results showed that the photo dates back to the Israeli army detaining a number of Palestinian young men and forcing them to remove their clothes in the Janba area of Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron, and that it had previously been published on September 29, 2025.

What the fact-checking team found

Why is this claim misleading?

Out of temporal and geographic context: The claim relied on a genuine photo taken south of Hebron in September 2025 documenting Israeli violations against Palestinian young men, whose place and time were then altered to present it as a scene from Yemen, in order to suggest that a mass capture of Syrian fighters had taken place there.
