The truth about the academic qualifications of Damascus’s First Lawyer Hossam al-Khattab

Pages and accounts on social media circulated posts questioning the academic qualifications of Damascus’s First Lawyer, Hossam al-Khattab, alleging that he holds the position without the necessary academic credentials.

Kashaf’s verification team identified widely circulated posts claiming that the First Lawyer of Damascus, Hossam al-Khattab, holds no more than a high school certificate. To verify the claim, the team contacted an official source at the Bar Association, who confirmed that al-Khattab holds an official university degree in law and is registered as a practising lawyer at the Bar Association’s Idlib branch. The team also obtained a copy of an official record issued by the Free Lawyers’ Syndicate, Idlib branch, dated 21 April 2021, which clearly proves that al-Khattab passed the required examination and assessment and was formally transferred from the register of trainee lawyers to the register of practising lawyers — categorically refuting the claims about his lack of academic or legal eligibility.

Why is this claim misleading?

Inaccurate information: The circulating posts relied on baseless claims about the academic attainment of Damascus’s First Lawyer, whereas official documents issued by the Bar Association prove that he holds a law degree and is listed as a practising lawyer in the syndicate’s registers.
