Accounts and pages on social media circulated a video claiming to show a Syrian man who returned from Germany to find his wife accompanied by a Dagestani man, leading to a fight between them, attached to a story stating that one of the people in the clip says he is the one who freed the wife.
The fact-checking team traced the circulating clip by breaking it into still frames, running a reverse image search, and comparing it with earlier versions, and found that the video had been published since 2025 and had no connection to the circulating story about a man returning from Germany or the presence of a Dagestani man. The original version showed that it documents a fight between a General Security member and a person loyal to the former regime in the city of Damascus, before it was later republished attached to different claims inconsistent with its true context.
Why is this claim misleading?
A change of context: The claim relied on stripping an old clip from its original context and attaching a fabricated story about a marital dispute and a man returning from Germany, in order to gain wide reach and drive engagement around a story unrelated to the video's content.
