Accounts on social media circulated a video that those who posted it claimed documents a young man in Syria exploiting an elderly vendor’s sleep to rob him.
The Kashaf team verified the circulating clip by converting it into still frames and conducting a reverse-image search using Google Lens. It became clear that the video has nothing to do with Syria, but rather documents a theft of an elderly newspaper vendor that took place in the city of Helwan in Cairo governorate, Egypt; the incident received local press coverage and Egyptian platforms published its details and the reactions to it.
Why is this claim misleading?
Out of geographic context: The video was falsely linked to the situation in Syria, when the incident actually took place in the Egyptian city of Helwan.
