Accounts on social media circulated a video claiming it was recent, showing a number of people eating hyena meat after cooking it, with those who posted it alleging that they had done so because of hunger brought on by government policies that had deprived them even of chicken.

The fact-checking team at Kashaf carried out a digital trace that included converting the video into still frames and running a reverse image search on them via Google Lens, alongside tracing older copies of the clip, their publication dates and the contexts that accompanied its circulation, and found that the video dates back to 6 December 2022.
The check also showed that after the wave of criticism directed at the people appearing in the video at the time, they explained that their eating of hyena meat was an expression of what they described as manliness, and not a result of hunger or deprivation of food.
Why is this claim misleading?
Out of temporal context: Those who posted it recycled an old clip dating back to 2022 and presented it as recent, replacing the original context explained by the people appearing in it with an economic and livelihood framing, to suggest that government policies had driven residents to eat unusual meat.
