Accounts on social media platforms circulated a video claiming it documented residents of Daraa rehanging a picture of Bashar al-Assad, coinciding with escalating protests and government decisions described as arbitrary and haphazard.

The Kashaf fact-checking team traced the clip digitally by converting it into still frames and running a reverse search using Google Lens, alongside a review of its publication date and original context. This showed that the clip dates to March 19, 2026, and documents protesters hanging a picture of the deposed Bashar al-Assad in one of Daraa's squares and then tearing it up, coinciding with the anniversary of the start of the Syrian revolution. The Kashaf team had previously debunked the clip on April 16, 2026.
Why is this claim misleading?
Out of temporal context: An old clip was recirculated within the context of the current protests, while its original context documents an incident entirely different from what the claim attributed to it.
