Pages on social media circulated a video claiming to document a car explosion that occurred today in the Bab Sharqi district of eastern Damascus.
The fact-checking team ran a digital trace of the clip that included breaking it into still frames and subjecting them to a reverse image search, alongside reviewing previously published recordings, and the verification showed the scenes matched a clip published on 19 May 2026 documenting an explosion at the same location at that time, with no indications or reliable sources confirming a new explosion in the district on 7 August 2026.
Why is this claim misleading?
Out of temporal context: The claim relied on reposting an old video out of its temporal context and implying it documents an incident that happened today, contrary to the established facts that trace the scene to an earlier explosion at the same location.
