Pages and accounts on social media circulated a video, with those posting it claiming that it was recent and that it documented thousands of Syrians coming out to demand the fall of the regime.

The circulating video of a crowd in the street

The fact-checking team verified the circulating clip by breaking it down into still frames and running a reverse image search to establish its reality, and found that the video is old and was used outside its temporal context, dating to 5 December 2025 and in fact documenting Syrians celebrating the anniversary of liberation.

The team found a video filmed from the same location and the same angle, and recorded several matches between the original clip and the recently circulated one, including the direction of the wind and the movement of the flags, the position of one of the cars, the location of the organising staff in red and yellow, as well as a number of banners visible in the scene. Verification also showed that the audio heard in the circulated clip was fabricated and had been technically overlaid and merged with the video to change the reality of the chants and the scene.

Why is this claim misleading?

Out of temporal context: The claim relied on recycling an old video dating to 5 December 2025 that documents celebrations of the anniversary of liberation, and changing its context to suggest that it documents recent demonstrations demanding the fall of the regime.
