Accounts and pages on social media circulated a video showing a military statement, which those sharing it claimed announced the launch of a "coup against the government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa" issued by the "Southern Operations Room".

The clip circulated on social media

The fact-checking team verified the circulating video by breaking it into still frames and running a reverse search to establish its origin, and found that the clip is old and has no connection to current events or to any coup against the government. The original video is a speech issued by the "Southern Operations Room" during the "Deterrence of Aggression" battle and the breaking of restrictions, dated 07/12/2024, in which the continuation of military operations toward the capital Damascus against the Assad regime was announced at the time.

The results showed that edits and text effects had been added to the circulating clip to change its original context.

Why is this claim misleading?

Old video out of context: Recycling an old video clip dated 07/12/2024 and editing it to change its context, then claiming it is a statement announcing a coup against President Ahmed al-Sharaa's government, is classified as misleading.
