Pages and accounts on social media circulated a video whose publishers claimed it documented protests in the city of Azaz in the Aleppo countryside, punctuated by chants demanding the fall of the regime.

The Kashaf fact-checking team traced the clip digitally by breaking it into still frames and running a reverse image search on them, which showed that the original video was filmed in the city of Maarat al-Numan and documents popular protests against rising fuel prices, not in Azaz as its publishers claimed. An examination of the audio track, compared against the original version, showed that the circulated chants were added to the original recording later and were not part of the sound accompanying the scene.

Why is this claim misleading?

Changing the context: A video clip was repurposed outside its original context, with manipulation of the accompanying audio, in order to suggest that the protests took place in Azaz and carried demands different from what the scene actually documented.
