Accounts on social media circulated reports whose publishers claimed that a military agreement had been concluded between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Syrian Arab Republic, under which the kingdom would supply the Syrian army with tanks, armored personnel carriers and aircraft worth 1 billion and 600 million dollars.

The fact-checking team followed up on the circulating claim through keyword searches and a review of official Saudi and Syrian sources, and found that the official records and statements of the Saudi and Syrian news agencies, and of the defense ministries in both countries, contain no announcement or documentation of any military or armament deal between the two sides. The team had previously refuted a similar claim on 15 January 2026, when a reverse image search showed that the photographs attached to the claim were old and had been published in March 2022 during the World Defense Show in Saudi Arabia.

Why is this claim misleading?
Fabricated news: Reports of a large arms deal between Saudi Arabia and Syria were fabricated without reliance on any official source or announcement, while old photographs from the World Defense Show held in Saudi Arabia in 2022 were recycled to lend the claim credibility.
