Accounts on social media circulated a video claiming it documented Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces and security forces repelling a Syrian aircraft that had breached Iraqi airspace and forcing it to withdraw.
Splitting the video into still frames and running a reverse-image search on them showed that the clip is old and unrelated to the current claim. The results showed it had been published earlier on 20/07/2023 and documents scenes of ISIS targeting an Iraqi helicopter while attacking the group's positions in the Hamrin mountain range during 2019.
Why is this claim misleading?
Old video out of context: An old clip of an Iraqi helicopter being targeted was reshared and framed with a new context claiming Iraqi forces recently repelled a Syrian aircraft, which makes the link between the video and the claim misleading.
