The truth about a video of an Iraqi military buildup on the Syrian border

Pages and accounts across social media circulated a video claimed to be recent, purportedly documenting Iraqi military reinforcements on the Syrian border in anticipation of an attack on Lebanon by the Syrian state.

Kashaf followed the circulating claim and, through digital analysis of the clip — breaking it into still frames and running reverse searches on them — found that the video is old and documents no recent Iraqi military movement towards Syria. The search showed the clip shows American military convoys entering Iraq through the Trebil border crossing, located along the Iraqi-Jordanian border, in June.

Why is this claim misleading?

Temporal and geographic distortion: An old video documenting American military convoys crossing the Jordanian border was recirculated in a different context.

Fabricated event context: The footage was falsely attributed to recent Iraqi military reinforcements on the Syrian border linked to events in Lebanon.
