Pages on social media platforms circulated a report claiming that the price of a subsidized bread bundle had been raised to 6000 Syrian pounds starting Saturday, 25 July.
The fact-checking team carried out field inquiries that included contacting a number of bakery owners and citizens, who confirmed to Kashaf that no change had occurred to subsidized bread prices. Reviewing official and open sources, the team found a statement by Hasan al-Ahmad, director of the media department at the Ministry of Economy and Industry, to Enab Baladi newspaper, denying the circulating reports about raising the bundle price and confirming that the official price remains 4000 Syrian pounds without any change.
Why is this claim misleading?
Inventing administrative decisions: The claim relied on an alleged decision to raise the subsidized bread bundle price that rests on no official announcement, whereas the Ministry of Economy and Industry confirmed that the official price remains unchanged, in order to stir confusion over the prices of basic goods.
