Accounts on social media circulated a statement attributed to Fionnuala Ni Aolain, a member of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, with those spreading it claiming she denied that armed Druze groups committed massacres or violations against the Bedouin tribes in Suwayda and instead assigned responsibility to members of the Ministry of Defense, General Security, and Syrian tribes.
The fact-checking team reviewed the official website and accounts of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, along with its published statements, reports, and remarks, and found no statement, press release, or interview containing the circulating phrases or confirming that Fionnuala Ni Aolain made them. A review of the report and press release issued by the commission on 27 March 2026, published on the website of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, showed that the commission documented serious violations committed by multiple parties during the Suwayda events, and that the second wave of violence began after government forces withdrew, when armed Druze groups attacked Bedouin civilians and committed violations including killing, torture, arbitrary detention, forced displacement, and looting, ultimately displacing most of the Bedouin community from the affected areas.
