Accounts on social media circulated a report claiming that three children had died as a result of the major flooding of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor province.
Kashaf traced the circulating report through keyword searches and a review of official government sources and websites, and found that the Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, denied in a post on his official Facebook page that any deaths had been recorded as a result of the Euphrates River flooding, confirming that the recorded deaths were of children who had been swimming in the river and are not directly linked to the river’s flooding.
Why is this claim misleading?
False context: The circulating posts linked the drowning incidents to the flooding of the Euphrates River to spread panic, while official bodies clarified that the deaths resulted from swimming in the river and were not caused by the flooding.
